We Just Know…

Kids are funny. They think parents just don't know. But we do. I thought I'd put together some examples of what I'm talking about for today's blog. Feel free to add your own!

For instance, when talking to the Talented One and he replies, "Sure, Mom," what he really means is, "If it will make you leave me alone, I'll agree to anything."

When the Good Looking One calls and asks, "What are you doing tonight?" what he really means is, "I'm hungry and I'd like to have mom cook me a good meal while I hang with my family."

When the Princess comes to me and says, "I love you, Aunt Hope" it usually means she wants something, but doesn't want to ask.

When the Drama Queen comes up to me and asks, "What are you doing?" it really means, "Mom, I want you to do ***** for me."

When the Smart One jumps out of the van and says a quick, "Goodbye" what he really means is, "Mom, please don't embarrass me in front of anyone today." (I'm sorry, I can't help it, sometimes this other person takes control of me and I just have to whine shout out how much I'm going to miss him today!)

When B-boo says, "Mom", it usually means, "Mom, I already have (whatever I am looking for), so can we please go now?"

And then, there's the actions. I just love those.

For instance, last night, when B-Boo hurdled over me at lightening speed and dove for the back of the van, I knew there was a homeless person on one of the nearby corners and she was racing for a bag to give to them. Yup, he was on the right hand corner. And was he surprised to have a bag of goodies all ready for him.

This works for pets, too. When Roxy disappears, we know she's managed to catch yet another bird. So far, we haven't' been wrong!

When the Drama Queen put her hands on her hips and gives you that look, it means she is not happy with you at all…or she's thinking that you're pretty ridiculous.

Oh….and when she disappears upstairs after being talked to by mom, it's so she can go tell Daddy all about it.

When the Smart One gives you that smirk, it means he is trying really hard not to laugh at you.

And then there are those moments, when you can stop a child dead in his/her tracks and warn them not to even think about doing whatever it is there about to do. And they look at you in amazement that you know. Well, of course, silly!

One of my favorite memories of my oldest son is when I asked him about something one day out of the blue. He just looked at me in shock and asked, "Mom, how did you know?"

Well, son, you see, it's because I'm a mom…and we just know these things.

Laughable Moment #19

Apparently Chicken Noodle Butt was having issues this morning.

First, he came downstairs without getting dressed.

He was sent back upstairs to get dressed for school.

He came back downstairs with a shirt full of paint and food that he had obviously not put into the dirty hamper.

He was sent back upstairs to get a clean shirt.

He came back downstairs with a different shirt. I thought it looked kind of weird because there was a white spot on his chest near the collar and was wondering how he had managed to get it there since he still hadn't brushed his teeth.

However, the boy only had one sock on his left foot, so I thought I'd deal with that first.

"How come you only have one sock on?"

Shocked look appears.

"Oh, I forgot to put the other one on."

He turns around and goes back upstairs.

He comes back moments later, two socks on his feet, black shorts and a tan shirt…with a white thing on it. I"m seriously trying to contain my laughter, because I'm sure it's hard to be five. So I ask him to come here.

He does.

The white thing is a tag; the kind that is a part of the shirt, not a flappy one that you have to cut off. I crack up. I'm sorry, I just can't help it. I ask him to please take off his shirt. He does.

His eyes widen.

"Aunt Hope, my shirt was inside."

We both laugh. I'm still giggling about it every time I picture it. What a way to start the day!

Air Hockey

When I was much younger, I lived in a small town and went to a small school. Across the street was a little store. We'd buy burritos for lunch and play Space Invaders, Centipede, and Foosball. I'll admit it, back in the day, I was the reigning Foosball champion!

A few summers ago, at camp with out teenagers, another leader and I discovered we both liked Foosball. And Air Hockey. A lot. So we spent some time playing the teens. I'll admit it, I'm not the reigning champion anymore.

Last fall, I was at my dear friend's 40th birthday party and somehow we got to talking about things that we like to do and games that we like to play. I mentioned that I'd love to have an Air Hockey table some day. Turns out, one of them just happened to have an Air Hockey table sitting in their garage because they'd taken up Ping Pong. (Another sport I'm learning to enjoy!) Anyway, soon after, my family became the proud owners of an Air Hockey table. Yippee!

Yes, seriously!

The thing about our family and air hockey is that it's probably not quite what you imagine air hockey to be. First, we're a competitive family. Yes, it's true. We play to win. That means the adults will play against five year olds and still want to win. But we also know how to have fun, and we can laugh out loud and cheer for the others when they lose. Because we're just like that. And we make it to where the younger ones don't mind losing, because it was so much fun to play! And when certain…er…children beat someone older, well, they know it's because, frankly, they earned it!

Sometimes we have problems with our table. For some reason, when certain children/friends get excited, the plastic puck tends to leave the table. I'm not sure why. But the puck has been known to land in my Christmas tree, my hair, my forehead, behind my bookshelf, under the hockey table, and many other places as well. Sometimes the Drama Queen has to be redirected a little. She has to be reminded that while she is very excited, our ears can't take the screaming anymore and our faces can't take the plastic pucks coming at us at full speed. Really.

Oh, and that's another thing. When we play, it gets really loud. And the faces are hilarious! Because really, it's not just tossing a puck across the table, it's a family event.

Yup, it's just the way we are.

Good Times

Today, we decided to have a family day. It's the first time in a long time that we've had the family home, with no school, work, appointments, or anything else. So we went bowling this morning before the crowds hit!

IMG_1453(rev 0)

And we had fun! We laughed when the Smart One through his ball backwards and shared the story of when Mom did the same thing the first time she ever bowled…and how Dad laughed at her, just like we were laughing at him! And we cheered! And we begged the Drama Queen to please not scream so loudly each time she got a strike…and she got a lot of them, which was just unfair!

IMG_1455(rev 1)

And some of us learned new things!

And for some, it took a bit longer…

But that's ok, because we had fun! And then we went home and hubby made amazing hamburgers while some of us painted, because painting has become a serious hobby for us! Seriously, those hamburgers were so good! And then hubby took care of..well, the bird that flew into our window while we tried to keep the dogs from attacking it, because, if there is one thing about our family, there just cannot be a day with absolutely no drama!

And then some of the kids did the Hannah Montanna Ho-down while we watched and laughed.

And then, after everyone was settled, B-boo and I, along with our good friend, watched Alias…like, three episodes…because, well, because we wanted to.

And there was nothing to interrupt us.

Because today was a free day!

Laughable Moments #18

Chicken Noodle Butt.

That boy is crazy. He really is. He won't stop talking. He won't sit still. He's five.

He's rolling around. Attempting cartwheels. Attempting somersaults. Attempting back flips.

This morning, he has my big fuzzy blanket. He was flattening it out…putting a lot of effort into it, so B-boo asked him what he was doing.

"I'm making a burrito."

OK.

So he's hopping around as a burrito and having a fun time doing it. This goes on for at least five minutes.

Then he falls. Flat on his face. He struggles to get out. He jumps up.

He shouts, "I'm OK!" and smiles real big.

He's back in his burrito again. Crazy, I tell you, crazy!
