Poptarts

This weekend was the drama queen's birthday, so we had a sleepover. She got to choose breakfast; so opted for poptarts. We don't have them that often, so I went for it. I thought, "Hey, at least I won't be making pancakes after a sleepless night of noisy girls!"

Early Saturday morning I got up and had the girls happily eating poptarts and finishing up their crafts from the night before. Realizing I had a moment, I grabbed a cup of coffee and some toasted blueberry poptarts and went to relax for a moment.

And remember my childhood. You see, I remember blueberry poptarts.

My grandparents had a house by a lake in Indiana. We lived pretty far away, but we'd visit them during the summer. We'd drive for what seemed like forever, and I knew we were getting close when we started passing Amish horse and buggies. I remember arriving and Grandpa walking us to the pantry and opening the door…to a pantry full of poptarts. As a child, it seemed like the pantry went as high as a mountain…a mountain of blueberry (and other flavors) of poptarts!

I honestly can't remember ever eating poptarts as a child any place else. We may have, but I don't remember it. You see, mom was awesome; she'd cook us a hot breakfast every morning before school. We also had dinner at the table together every night. We didn't eat cereal much until we were older. As a matter of fact, I used to love going camping because I knew my parents would get the little boxes of cereal and we'd get to have a different flavor each morning and eat it right out of the box!

Now that I'm an adult, I'm really not a big fan of poptarts, (I'd rather have a hot breakfast); but I do so enjoy a toasted blueberry poptart. I'll smile as I eat one, remembering our summer visits to the lake house. We'd get up early and fish off of the pontoon. Or stay up late and catch fireflies.

Tomorrow marks ten years since my grandfather passed away; he left us shortly after the Drama Queen made her entrance. My grandmother followed along a year later. I'm glad my daughter chose to have blueberry poptarts to celebrate her 10th birthday. It was nice to take a walk down memory lane.

Lost Get Found

Music is strong in our family. I’m really not that musical myself, although I did play the clarinet for 8 years and was pretty good at it. I love to sing and goof off, but I’m not real sure anyone would love to listen to me sing! Hubby plays the guitar. As a matter of fact, he’s been known to serenade me. When we first started dating, he came to my work with a guitar, blanket and the hood of his car! He brought me out, sat me on the car and proceeded to play and sing to me. My boss wanted to know why one of his *girls* was being serenaded in the parking lot!

My oldest son also plays the guitar. I have fond memories of he and his friends sitting on my roof, playing their guitars and singing. (Ok, and playing spoons, but that’s another blog!)

You’ve often heard of me talk about the Talented One. He is a musical genius in my humble opinion. I know I’m his mother and so there is a different swelling of pride, but when we were in Sedona last week, he gave us a mini concert the morning before we left. The resort had a grand piano, so he played. I swelled, thinking, “That’s MY son!” He plays so beautifully. There was a lady sitting on the couch in the room; tears streaming down her face. God has indeed, blessed my son with a gift.

The Smart One has even been picking up the piano. His teacher at school asked him to join percussion this year at school so that he can play in the jazz band next year.

B-boo is more like me….not really musical, but enjoys listening! And being a part of whatever children’s production we are a part of. She’s great at organizing, setting up, keep the ball rolling, etc. Great at taking pictures. She doesn’t think she’s musically talented, but she is on the dance team.

Our latest project was the Drama Queen and Punky. They’ve been having fun recording, “The Lost Get Found,”  by Brit Nicole. Today, they sang it in church. I thought I’d share it with you. I love that Punky spends so much time teaching my child and that they have so much fun together. Thank you, Punky!

Camp and Cuddles

The Drama Queen went to her first ever Bible Camp. It was out in the woods and without any family member for a whole week. We were a little nervous, especially considering her food allergies, but I've been up to the camp a few times and knew that they are a nut free facility…and that the chef would make sure to only feed her things that she is not allergic to…So…I managed convince her father that she'd be safe and away she went!

One of the things I love about this camp is that they post photos of your children doing various activities at camp. I got some great shots of the Smart One last year! Unfortunately, not so much the Drama Queen.

Adventure Mountain
She's in the green in the background. She looks busy…I asked her if she had fun and she stated a big, "yeah!" She talked about the lake and the walks that were four miles long (That would be why she has the name, "Drama Queen"…it wasn't four miles.) She talked of snacks and the food…and some not so good food…ha ha. She absolutely loved it.

And finally, I found a picture that proved it just a little bit!

Dancing on a table…that's my girl! Whew…it's always good for a mom to see actual proof of her child having fun when she isn't there to share in on it!

The exhausted child came home on Friday and crashed…literally on top of me! B-boo was cracking up, she looked so funny! We had time for cuddles in the morning as she talked more about her day at camp…then went back to sleep. And more cuddles again this morning before she went off with her Daddy.

Ah…there's just nothing better for a girl than camp and cuddles to come home to!

My Kids

There is just nothing better than having children. Really. And a day spent with them is especially fun! We started off with the Smart One getting his long hair cut. What a shock! He looks older, and we can see his beautiful eyes again! He was at camp all week, so it was really nice to have him back and listen to him as he talked about his week; what he liked, what moved him, etc.

I spent this evening with B-boo at her dance pool party. We took along a couple of her friends and the Drama Queen. I got a kick out of watching them tumble in the grass. It brought back memories of when they used to compete together in gymnastics.

After, we went home and the Drama Queen put on a concert of us. My dearest friend was there to share it with me. It brought tears when she sang, "The Climb." When she was finished and her voice could sing no more, the Talented One lowered the lights and graced us with his music. I cannot tell you how much his music moves me. When he plays, a peace just comes over you. It is beautiful. Sitting there in silence while he played is about the best way to end a day. Even more, watching his younger brother sitting there beside him, just listening, while he plays, and his sister on the other side, again, sitting and listening.

I love how supportive my kids are of each other and their talents. We are so blessed with wonderful children!

Tomorrow I leave for camp and my blog will be shut down for a week. I love spending a week at camp with my favorite teens, but I also miss my family while I am gone.

I'll see them in a week though, for a much needed vacation with my older brother, all of my kids, and my parents.

It doesn't get much better than that, either!
