Nerf Gun Wars

Thanksgiving weekend, the Good Looking One and I were watching "A Christmas Story" and laughing at the many memories that the movie has brought us over the years. We joked about getting the Smart One a "Red Ryder Rifle." It was at that point that he suggested I get them both matching guns for Christmas.

Yeah, ok. We live in the city…not the country; not a lot of opportunity for gun using here.

However….I became bound and determined to get them matching guns for Christmas.

Enter, the Nerf gun war.

This is the Good Looking One getting ready for fire.

What you can't see here, is Punky being attacked by their joining of the forces!

I have never laughed so hard at Christmas. And the gun wars have continued…with a house full of extra teens like Little Bits and the Twin, the darts have been flying! It's not safe getting into the van, walking around a corner, or sleeping.

It's always fun to have memories like these to fall back on!

Hamsterbar(rev 0)

via itsavivasthing.typepad.com

I haven't blogged in 3 weeks! Unbelievable..but I've taken lots of pictures and had wonderful family moments.

So, because my wonderful friend shared a rodent story with me (Karen…DID you catch that rat???)…I thought it would be fun to re-post one of our funniest moments!

Enjoy!

What a weekend!! Middle son’s hamster showed up missing on Sunday morning. He’d cleaned the cage on Saturday evening and forgot to lock it. The little booger knows how to push the door open, which is why he has to keep it locked!

So we searched and searched and finally went to bed, telling our son the hamster was bound to show up in the middle of the night by running across someone's feet. Not so.

At 4 am, I was awakened by scratching noises. They'd gone on for a few moments I think, as I was between the land of gone and come back. As I drifted back to consciousness, I realized the sound was coming from the wooden TV table. About a second later, I realized it must be the hamster! I leaped up, turned on the vanity light so as to not awaken my slumbering husband….but the little critter had vanished. Bummer. I decided to go back to bed and pray and try and get some sleep, all the while wondering how that little hamster got up all of those stairs and made it to the farthest room in the house! A bit later, I heard the scratching again. I crawled out of bed again, turned on the light, and …….don't hold your breath….nothing. I crawled back into bed, prayed some more, tried to doze. About 5:12 am, I heard it again…this time going through plastic…and I immediately freaked. You see, we have a poster of our oldest daughter that I still had not framed, wrapped in heavy plastic beside hubby's desk in the room. I envisioned this hamster shredding away that poster; the very last poster of her competing in gymnastics….this was war! I jumped up onto the bed and pounced over hubby while yelling at him

"WAKE UP! The hamster is in our room!"….made it to the light in a flash…and caught the little booger, standing up on his hind legs on the carpet at the end of our bed as if to say, “Oh Lord…she's caught me and she doesn’t look happy!”

Hubby quickly shoved the door close so she wouldn't escape! Then he went on one side and I on the other. He is now wide awake and yelling at me to catch the hamster….yeah right! The dern little critter was way to fast for me! As she scampered between my legs and headed off to my closet, I grabbed my cell phone and called the hamster owner who was downstairs in his bed dreaming the night away. I heard a groggy, "Hello?" to which I screamed into the phone, "GET UP HERE NOW!!!" 1/10 of a second later he appeared in our room. (I didn't know the boy could move that fast!) I yelled at him that his hamster was in our closet and he needed to get her out of there please. She was so wound up every time he caught her she'd jump out of his hands, so I ran downstairs and grabbed her ball, ran back upstairs, handed it to him and she jumped right in. He promptly took her back downstairs, put her in her cage and locked the door. He said the poor little thing was just guzzling down that water! I gotta tell you; I asked the boy…what were you thinking when you ran upstairs? He said, he thought something horribly awful must have happened and he'd better get up there now. Poor kid…he's probably traumatized for life. I still crack up every time I remember his look of sleep and surprise; I’ve been laughing ever since!

A Child’s Heart Remembered – Josh Stevens Foundation

posted by Hope via joshstevensfoundation.org

I teach Bible study on Sunday mornings to our youth at church. I love these teenagers with all my heart. It was through this youth ministry that I met Josh. I’ll never forget the first time I met him. Shelbie, his older sister brought him in and sat him down next to her. She put her arm around him and announced that this was her little brother and that he’d be joining us that morning. He wasn’t technically old enough to be in the class yet, but I was touched by how his sister wanted him there, and the smile on his face; so he stayed.

And he was such a blessing to our youth group. His smiles, his enthusiasm for life, his rap songs, and his kindness. Josh was not afraid to seize any opportunity to show Christ to others through his Kindness.

This morning, I taught on seizing the opportunity when God puts it before you. Don’t miss your chance; don’t ignore it, just take the moment, the opportunity, and do something with it!

A little while later, I was helping run the *store* for our Children’s Ministry. Each month, the children have the chance to turn in tickets that they have earned in Bible study for a prize. One little boy in particular wanted the gingerbread man on the parachute. We dug through the bag and gave it to him as we received his tickets. Next came a little girl who only had one ticket, but wanted a two ticket item. She’d already spent two of her tickets, but really wanted the next item on her list. I thought about just giving it to her, but the table was crowded with children who were trying to get there *purchases* in and I felt an *urge* to leave it alone. Very unlike me. *smile*

A few moments later, the boy who wanted that little gingerbread man handed it back to me. He asked if he could please have his tickets back. I was puzzled, but then my heart melted as I watched him hand her his ticket so that she could have the special Christmas bookmark that she wanted.

I so wanted to give him a kindness card, as his special act reminded me so much of Josh; but I didn’t have one with me. But God is good and was showing me something, because there was a Kindness card to be found in the church. I grabbed another gingerbread man on a parachute, the Kindness card, and went in search of the boy, who was just leaving the church. I stopped his mother, and asked her to wait for one moment. Then I asked Jonathan, the boy, if he knew what a Kindness card was. Indeed, he did. I explained to him how wonderful his act of kindness was this morning, and how he had reminded me so much of Josh that it brought tears to my eyes. He smiled graciously, as he took his Kindness card and his gingerbread man.

It is moments like these that we need to seize; exactly what I was trying to teach a roomful of teenagers this morning. Exactly what Josh would have done.

Seize the opportunity; Be Kind and Bless someone else today.

Quotable Quotes #15

We had a pretty busy day, today. I had a pot of soup cooking, but not quite as fast as I'd planned it to be. While Bboo and I were at Walmart, she smelled a fresh loaf of bread, and since she hadn't eaten all day, asked if we could take it. Who can refuse a loaf of fresh bread? After we arrived home, only to meet up with Daddy and the Drama Queen, the following conversation takes place.

Drama Queen was asking for something…I don't remember what.

B-boo, "Stop complaining. Seems to me, you got Taco Bell. I only got bread."

Me, "Yes, dear, but as I recall, it was a whole loaf of bread!"
